Directions From 3A

A few of the Back Roads of the South Shore museums are directly on the Old Massachusetts Path - today's Route 3-A - but the others are slightly harder to locate.

Old Ordinary

The Old Ordinary (Hingham) may be found by turning right off Route 3-A directly on to Lincoln Street (if coming from the North). From the south, turn left on to Water Street (following detour signs). Turn right on Main Street, then left on North Street. Bear right off North Street on to Lincoln Street at triangle with Lincoln's statue. The Ordinary is opposite the statue on the easterly side of the street.

Hull Lifesaving Museum

Turn east at the intersection of 3-A and East St. (Route 228) and follow 228 into Hull where it becomes Nantasket Avenue. Follow Nantasket Avenue (ocean on your right) for approximately 5 miles, about a seven-minute drive through town. After crossing a narrow isthmus, bear right at the distinctly modern Wastewater Treatment Facility. The Museum, a green clapboard building with cream trim and a deep red shingle roof directly facing Boston Light, will be the first building on your left.

Cohasset Historical Society

To visit the Cohasset Historical Society, turn east off 3-A at the blinking yellow light on to Sohier St. After a mile and a half, turn right on to North Main Street and proceed south by the Common past the Episcopal Church on the hill, and through the village. The Society’s yellow brick headquarters at the Pratt Building will be on the left just past the village.

To visit the Cudworth House in Scituate, turn east off 3-A on to First Parish Road at the fork just south of Scituate Town Hall. The Cudworth House is about three-quarters of a mile on the right, at the intersection with Cudworth Road.

 

Scituate Lighthouse

The Lighthouse is located at the end of
Lighthouse Road; from Scituate Harbor, turn onto Jericho Road and continue driving along the coast until you reach Lighthouse Road; bear right and drive to end. There is ample parking.

Scituate Maritime & Irish Mossing Museum

Turn east off 3-A at the traffic lights at the junction with Route 123 and right onto Driftway. Travel until you pass Ladd's Way on the right, and then look for the museum on the same side of the street.

Mann Farmhouse

To visit the Mann Farmhouse in Scituate, turn east off 3-A at the intersection where Rt. 123 enters on the west, turn east on to Country Way. Take a right on to Stockbridge Road. The Mann Farmhouse is about three-quarters of a mile on the right at the intersection with Greenfield Lane.

 

Winslow House

The Winslow House is on Route 139. Turn east off 3-A on Tremont St., which continues as Careswell St. The Winslow House is just over a mile on the right. NOTE: Route 139 loops through Marshfield, connecting with 3-A at two points. You want to use the southerly juncture near the Duxbury town line.

 

Alden House Historical Site

To visit the Alden House in Duxbury, turn east off 3-A on to Alden Street (on a sharp curve). Look for the blue Library sign (with the tiny "John Alden House" sign above it). The Alden House is on the right around a curve after you pass the Duxbury Art Complex.

To visit the King Caesar House, turn east off 3-A at the traffic light where Rt. 114 enters from the west on to St. George St. Follow St. George St. until it ends at a traffic circle at the junction with Washington St. and Powder Point Road. Bear left on Powder Point Road and take your first right on to King Caesar Road. The King Caesar House is about a quarter-mile on the left.

The Capt. Gershom Bradford House is on Route 3-A (931 Tremont St.) in Duxbury, just south of Harrison St. on the easterly side of the street.

 

Major John Bradford House

The Major John Bradford House is on the north side of the Jones River, on Landing Road. Follow Landing Road until you pass under a narrow railway bridge, then take the next left driveway up to the Bradford House. The entrance to Landing Road from 3-A is a sharp fork heading east.

 

Pilgrim Hall Museum

Pilgrim Hall Museum is on the easterly side of Route 3-A (75 Court St.) in Plymouth, south of the Route 44 lights.


Spooner House

The Spooner House is located on North Street in the center of downtown Plymouth. Turn east on to North Street towards Plymouth harbor, and the Spooner House is on the right side of the short street.

 

Jenney Grist Mill

To visit the mill, turn west off Route 3-A at the Town Square traffic lights in Plymouth Center. Bear left onto Market Street and then turn right on to Summer Street (The John Carver Inn is on the corner). Take the next left hand turn on to Spring Lane.

The Jabez Howland House is on the westerly side of Route 3-A (33 Sandwich St.) south of Plymouth Center and Town Brook.
